I was working on Wordpress SEO of one of my client and first thing which I should be taking care of is permalink structure.

Wordpress default permalink is not search engine friendly so to make permalinks search engine friendly I had to update it to some pretty permalink which should be search engine friendly. For any existing blog is you change your permalink, I would suggest make sure you use Dean’s permalink migration plugin.

So getting back to above point, some time when you change permalink, you need to update your .htaccess file to make those changes effective. This was the first time I found this issue, so thought of sharing it with you all.

Here is the message which I got when I updated the permalink:

You should update your .htaccess now. You need to add couple of lines of code into your .htaccess file and you can get it from bottom of Wordpress permalink setting page after updating your permalink:

Copy the codes provided and add this codes into your .htaccess file and your internal pages will stop giving you page not found error and now your new permalink structure is updated.

This is pretty simple and I’m sure this will help you and many if stuck in such situation. Make sure you should do it with utter care, if you are not sure, I would recommend take expert help.

Many of you who all are geeks here are must be knowing how to upgrade Wordpress right way. Upgrading Wordpress is easy but I would suggest if you are not geeky and can’t play with database for restore, you should try to avoid upgrading Wordpress yourself.

Few days back Wordpress released Wordpress 3.0 and many of you who were planning to merge their multiple Wordpress blog into one, must be looking forward to upgrade their blog to latest 3.0 version of Wordpress.

Here I’m sharing step by step guide which you can use to back up your blog.

Backup your blog Database:

First step I strongly suggest is take a complete database backup of your blog. This will ensure if something goes wrong, you can always save your blog.  You can use plugin like wp db backup to backup your Wordpress blog.

One Click Wordpress Update:

Click on Please update now button on your wordpress dashboard to go into page to update your Wordpress blog to latest version.

Now on the next page you will see the warning message to backup your database and files and as stated in step 1, I believe you have already taken the backup. Now click on Upgrade automatically.

Now if you have followed everything right, you will get successful message saying: WordPress upgraded successfully

That’s it and now you are on Wordpress 3.0 version and play with various features of Wordpress 3.0 and specially multi-site features of Wordpress 3.0.

Wordpress blog generally, designed with a lot of images and hence increases page load time at client side. And it is really annoying for your daily visitors as on every visit they make, experience high page load time. But, this problem was resolved lately when, cache feature was updated in the browsers. So, when a page is loaded, for the first time, all images are saved in a cache pool of the browser. Hence, when next time a visitor open the page, browser fetches an image from that browser cache, and decreasing page load time.

Image Caching for wordpress blog or website, hosted on apache server is enabled by editing .htacccess file in root or the specified directory for which image cache is to be enabled. Basically, a browser reads .htaccess file for cache control headers, which asks browser to save the image or any media, for 2 weeks (or more) so that the image or any media can be pulled by the browser until it expires. For instance, after 2 weeks the image will expire and browser will have to reload the image or media again in the cache. If browser cache is cleared, in that case browser will again have to reload the image or media in the cache.

Below is the step-by-step tutorial, on enabling Image Cache for wordpress blog or websie.

If you are particular about the improving performance of your web assets, you should enable Image Caching on Web server. The procedure goes right under:

Note: Before making any changes, backup the website data as well as the htaccess file.

1. Open the .htaccess file located in the root of web hosting (using ftp).

2. Add the below code snippet in the .htaccess file

   1: # Image and Flash content Caching for One Month

   2: <FilesMatch ".(flv|gif|jpg|jpeg|png|ico|swf)$">

   3: Header set Cache-Control "max-age=2592000"

   4: </FilesMatch>

3. Once the htaccess file is edited, save it. It will turn on the Image Caching and Flash Content Caching for one month, as depending upon the ‘max-age’ parameter value equals 2592000. Conversion Unit is 3600 = 1 hour and 29030400 = 1 year, that is cache file will never expire.

The above procedure if applied correctly will really effect the performance of your website or web blog hosted on Apache.

Since the evolution of the Smart Phones like iPhone, BlackBerry, etc. people have started surfing internet over smart phone browser. But websites like Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, etc. consumes a lot of bandwidth and third party platform dependencies like Java, .Net, etc., which are usually not compatible with most of the smart phones.

But, being the most popular and most visited sites, cannot just compromise over the mobile browser compatibility issue. Hence, these Social Media Companies have developed a light mobile version for the main website, which when where detected a phone browser gets redirected to mobile version of the actual website. The detection of a smart phone and then redirection is done usually at hosting server and for Apache Web Server, using the .htaccess file.

Below tutorial coming is for the administrators having mobile version and want to redirect website visitors to mobile version website within the domain or outside the domain.

In the above code, line number 3 detects the http_user_agent as iPhone, and further on line number 4, redirects the client to specified sub-domain, http://mob.yourdomain.com

2. How to detect and redirect iPhone visitor to a sub-directory with .htaccess file.

   3: RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} iPhone

   4: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/mobile-version/

In the above code, line number 3 detects the http_user_agent as iPhone, and further on line number 4 it fetches the sub-directory URI, and line number 5, redirects the client to the specified sub-directory, http://yourdomain.com/mobile-version/

At present, most of the Websites and blogs are hosted on Apache Server, which provides directory-level configurations for fine tuning and efficient performance of the website. Apache uses Hypertext Access files, that .htaccess file, which configures Apache’s Universal system-configuration directives.

Usually, a website or a blog, contains several private and sensitive information, and kept confidential for outside world. As, in my last article on Wordpress Security: Disable directory browsing using htaccess on Apache Web Server, directory browsing is enabled by default and have to disable it using .htaccess method. But disabling a directory means, even the administrator can’t access the contents, which can rate the height of stupidity. But, if we password protect web directory having confidential information, the directory will be disabled for the outside world, and user knowing the password, can gain access to its contents.

On apache server, uses .htaccess files to set directives in order to disable access or password protect directory. .htaccess, uses another file which, consists of usernames and passwords, allows successful authentication to directory. Below is the procedure to create a  .htaccess file:

1. Browse to directory which need to be password protected.
2. Create a file .htaccess within the directory, for instance, if I want to protect “www.youdomain.com/life”, I’ll create .htaccess file under the “life” sub-directory under root directory of the domain “yourdomain.com”.
3. Copy-Paste the below code snippet:

   1: AuthUserFile /www/path/to/file/.htpasswd

   2: AuthGroupFile /dev/null

   3: AuthName "Confidential Information"

   4: AuthType Basic

   5: require user joe

4. Now save the file.

.htaccess, uses another file which, consists of usernames and passwords, allows successful authentication to directory.

1. Create a text file that will store username and password parted by a colon (:).
2. Simply copy-paste the code in below snippet, to your htpasswd file.

   1: aky:admin

   2: joe:going

   3: akshay:khurana

3. Save the file as by .htpasswd or any other name, but make sure you edit the .htaccess file accordingly.

Once all the above configurations are set, upload the files via ftp if you created them locally at your end. Once the files are uploaded, the directory restrictions are set, and user will be prompted to access that specific directory having the .htaccess file. Below is a screenshot prompting the username and password for authentication.

If the login authentication is successful, user is redirected to the protected web directory, else it is redirected to 401 Authorization Required Exception Page.

How to display the Visitors local time and date in a blog is one of the questions that php cannot answer (As it is a server side language).

To show your blog visitors local time and date ,we are going to use a simple 3 liner java script code.

So to display the local time of your users local time and date any where in your blog -copy paste the code snippet given below.

Yeah that’s all you need for it to work.

What this code will do is take the time and local time zone of your blog visitors computer and displays it.

As you can see from the image ,this nifty little clock(just to say) of ours is without any design.

To give a nice look to this clock we will wrap this java script code inside a div named “clock”.

Is your website or blog using Apache Web Server ? Well, beware of the fact, that directory browsing is enabled by default.

Below is a screenshot which will clear you something about directory browsing.

If you are particular about the security aspects of your web assets, you should disable directory browsing on Web server. There are two ways to disable directory browsing from a web host, one is by editing .htaccess file and other is editing httpd.conf file. In this article, I’ll be dealing the first method, ie. using .htaccess file. The procedure goes right under:

1. Open the .htaccess file located in the root of web hosting (using ftp).

2. Search for Options Indexes, if found edit is to “Options-Indexes”.

3. If there is no Options Indexes existing, add as in new line “Options-Indexes”.

4. Once the htaccess file is edited, save it. This concludes that the directory browsing feature is disabled now.

Well, once the above procedure is applied, visitor will not be able to browse the web directory, if no index.html file exists.

There are a lot of plugins developed everyday, so as to harden the wordpress blog security. Since, plugins are itself installed on wordpress so that practice will not be effective. While on the other hand, configuring the htaccess file, which is found in the root or any other directory, lowers the vulnerability. It prevents many attacks including brute force attacks, directory listings, disclosure of sensitive information etc. on a website.

htaccess method is a bit complex method, hence improper usage and coding may break some third party plugins or theme templates. But, it is not that complex, a bit of guidance will significantly increase the security, for your blog or website.

Note: Before attempting any changes, kindly back-up your Wordpress Files and Database, for quick restoration.

Below is Code to restrict access to wp-content and wp-includes directories.

   1: Order Allow,Deny

   2: Deny from all

   3: <Files ~ "\.(css|jpe?g|png|gif|js)$">

   4:  Allow from all

   5: </Files>

Above code states, to deny access to directories and files except for images (jpg,gif,png), stylesheets (css) and javascripts (js), so that browser can fetch resources at the client side.

Put the above code snippet into your .htaccess file within the wp-content and wp-includes directories and save it.

And we are done, as we restricted the access to wp-content and wp-includes directories by configuring the .htaccess files individually under both directories.
